Three women were sitting together in a beauty parlor on a busy Saturday afternoon, waiting for their hair appointments. As usual, the conversation eventually turned toward the one subject they all had plenty of experience with: their husbands.
The first woman sighed dramatically and said, “I don’t understand men anymore. Last night, my husband told me he had to stay late at the office because of an important project.”
The second woman looked over. “And?”
“So I called his office because I needed to ask him something. His coworker answered and said, ‘He left almost an hour ago.’”
The second woman immediately laughed.
“That’s nothing. Mine told me he was going to his brother’s house after work. I called his brother later, and he said, ‘Your husband? He hasn’t been here all evening.’”
The first woman shook her head.
“See? This is exactly what I’m talking about. They make these plans as if we’re never going to ask a single question.”
The two women laughed, and then they both turned toward the third woman, who had been sitting quietly with a magazine in her lap.
“You’ve been awfully quiet,” the first woman said. “What’s your husband’s excuse these days?”
The third woman smiled.
“I don’t really have that problem.”
The other two women exchanged suspicious looks.
“What do you mean?”
“I always know exactly where my husband is.”
The first woman raised an eyebrow.
“Exactly where he is?”
“Exactly.”
The second woman leaned closer.
“Does he call you whenever he leaves somewhere?”
“No.”
“Does he send you his location?”
“No.”
“Do you have one of those tracking apps on his phone?”
The third woman laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
The first woman shook her head.
“Then there’s no way you always know where he is.”
“Oh, there is.”
“How?”
The third woman calmly put down her magazine.
“Because whenever my husband says he’s going somewhere, I simply ask him one question.”
The other two women waited eagerly.
“What question?”
“I ask, ‘Do you want me to come with you?’”
The first woman burst out laughing.
“And what happens?”
The third woman smiled.
“Suddenly, the place he was supposedly going becomes a terrible idea.”
The second woman laughed so hard that she nearly dropped her purse.
“That’s actually brilliant!”
The third woman continued, “Last week he told me he was going to watch the game with his friends.”
“So what did you do?”
“I said, ‘Great! I’ll come along. I haven’t seen your friends in ages.’”
“And?”
“He suddenly remembered that his friends were having a serious discussion about something.”
The first woman laughed.
“What kind of serious discussion?”
“I don’t know,” the third woman said. “Apparently it was so serious that wives weren’t allowed anywhere near it.”
The second woman shook her head.
“Men are unbelievable.”
The third woman nodded.
“Then yesterday he said he needed to go to the hardware store.”
The first woman asked, “Did you go with him?”
“I offered.”
“And?”
“He said the store was closing soon.”
“What time was it?”
“Ten in the morning.”
All three women started laughing.
The second woman wiped a tear from her eye.
“So you really do know where your husband is?”
The third woman smiled confidently.
“No. I don’t know where he is every minute of the day.”
The other two women looked confused.
“Then what do you know?”
She picked up her purse and stood up.
“I know something much more useful.”
“What?”
“I know that whenever my husband suddenly becomes very interested in leaving the house, I don’t need to investigate.”
She paused dramatically.
“I just say, ‘Have fun. I’ll be right here enjoying the peace and quiet.’”
The first woman smiled.
“And does that work?”
“Every time.”
The second woman asked, “Why?”
The third woman grinned.
“Because nothing ruins a secret plan faster than a wife who isn’t interested in stopping you.”
The three women burst into laughter.
Just then, the beautician walked over and asked, “Ladies, what’s so funny?”
The third woman picked up her phone and said, “We’re discussing husbands.”
The beautician immediately nodded.
“Oh. Say no more.”
The first woman laughed.
“Why? You have a husband too?”
The beautician smiled.
“No. I work in a beauty parlor.”
The women looked at her.
She continued, “I hear enough husband stories every day to know better.”
They all laughed again.
The third woman glanced at the clock and said, “Speaking of husbands, I should probably call mine.”
The first woman asked, “Why? To find out where he is?”
The third woman smiled.
“No. Just to remind him that I know where he is.”
The other two women stared at her.
“But you just said you don’t!”
She winked.
“I know. That’s what makes the conversation so interesting.”
